A Bowie County road will be closed while a bridge is replaced over the next few months.

Motorists who normally travel FM 991 near Akin Creek will need to find an alternate route beginning Monday, March 2. Crews will be closing the road to replace the bridge crossing Akin Creek just north of the intersection with US 67. The project also includes widening a section of FM 991 and installing safety lighting on US 67 near the intersection.

The work is expected to take about four months to complete.

Traffic will be detoured on a signed route through Redwater on US 67 and FM 991, but motorists are free to use alternate local routes. Portable message boards will be placed near the intersection beforehand to warn motorists of the scheduled road closure.

The construction schedule and road closure can change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen problems.

Anyone having any questions about the road closure, detour routes or construction work can call the Texas Department of Transportation Texarkana area office at 903-838-8574 for more information.
