The Texarkana, Texas Police Department has identified the driver of a vehicle who crashed and burned his vehicle last night, ultimately leaving two people dead.

Authorities say Billy Morehead, 36, of Texarkana, Texas was behind the wheel. Morehead and an unidentified female passenger both died in the fiery crash.

Police say at approximately 9:10PM Tuesday patrol officers responded to a report of a major vehicle accident on South Lake Drive at the Waggoner Creek Bridge, which is located just south of Caddo Street.  When officers arrived, they discovered a single vehicle in the wooded area on the south side of the roadway that was fully engulfed in flames. Both occupants died at the scene.

Police say the vehicle was allegedly stolen minutes before the crash. Authorities say the vehicle was taken from the Rock House Liquor Store in Texarkana, Ark. According to witnesses, the vehicle was travelling south on Lake Drive at a very high rate of speed when it failed to negotiate a curve. Investigators estimate the vehicle was travelling 90 to 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

After leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck the concrete bridge abutment and went airborne for approximately 30 feet before striking a tree.  It then came to rest on its side in the creek bed of Waggoner Creek and immediately burst into flames. Authorities believe that both occupants were likely killed on impact.

The bodies were sent to Dallas for autopsies and investigators continue their work to identify the female victim.

No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries occurred in connection with this incident.

South Lake Drive was closed between Caddo Street and Buchanan Road for both north and southbound traffic for approximately five hours while investigators and crime scene technicians were on scene.
