There’s no two ways around the fact that Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Who exit is coming, though a recent trailer raised eyebrows with a hint of Twelve’s regeneration. That may have been deliberate, as Capaldi cryptically reveals he’s already shot a death scene, without having filmed the 2017 Christmas special.

Even as Capaldi will remain aboard Doctor Who until December’s Christmas episode, the actor tells Graham Norton that he’s already filmed a death scene. Granted, a ten-month shoot for Season 10 covers plenty of ground, but Capaldi admits that they’ve yet to shoot the Christmas special, meaning some twist lies in store to explain Twelve’s presence beyond Season 10.

Mind you, the official search for Capaldi’s replacement has been said to take place later this year, so don’t expect that any potential Season 10 death scene will introduce us to the thirteenth Doctor early.

Elsewhere, in addition to Michelle Gomez’s return as Missy and another Master-ful return, Season 10 will also feature Jekyll & Hyde star Stephanie Hyam in a minor role. Peter Capaldi has suggested Jenna Coleman’s Clara might return in some form, while the search for a new Doctor will begin later this year. Steven Moffat’s last season was also confirmed for 2017, placing Chris Chibnall as the new head writer and executive producer, to begin after Season 10.

We’ll know more soon, but check out the first Season 10 trailers below, and stay tuned for Saturday’s premiere.
