Learn how to read what the clouds in the sky mean at a free class. You can find out how to read the sky and help warn others when storms are coming.

These classes are free and are put on by the National Weather Service in local communities. The goal is to help train local storm spotters. The more spotters there are, the quicker alerts can go out for others to stay safe.

There are two levels of classes that will be offered: basic and advanced. Local meteorologists will teach the classes. Here is the schedule for the Skywarn weather classes in our area:

  • Tuesday, March 28, Little River County Annex, 351 N. 2nd Street, Ashdown, Ark. Pre-register online. For information about this class contact Felecia Bowser at 318-631-3669
  • Thursday, March 30, at the Atlanta Fire Department, 606 South Louise Street, Atlanta, Texas. Pre-register online. For information about this class contact Gary Chatelain at 318-631-3669

Basic class is at 6PM and the advanced class is at 8PM. Local meteorologists will teach the classes.

According to the website for SKYWARN®, it is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.
