I know it's hot, but if you like gazing at the stars and watching meteor showers, this may be the best weekend for a shooting star camp-out of the year!

There are two Perseid Meteor Showers each year, the first is happening right now and will peek this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, August 12 - 14 with up to 50 - 80 meteors per hour. If you like watching shooting stars, then 1 or more per minute is about as good as it gets.

After this weekend the numbers will fall drastically and be back down to about 1 per hour by August 22.

The best times to watch are between midnight and dawn. The Perseid Shower is named that because the meteors appear to emanate from the Perseus Constellation. To find it in our area look about 10 degrees above the Northern horizon.

If you have a smartphone or tablet, download the Google Sky mapping program that uses your GPS enabled phone to show exactly where to look.

Happy star gazing!
