We all know that we pay more for items we get from convenience stores. There is a price for being able to run in and quickly get out of a store but what about other things that we purchase all of the time. What are the hidden costs of convenience?

The mark up for text messages is 6000%! Why? If you are not on an unlimited plan, you probably pay 10 cents per text message. That text message only costs the carrier about a sixth of a cent.

The mark up for bottled water is 4000%! A $2 bottle of water costs only about 5 cents to produce.

The mark up for movie theater popcorn is 1275%! But it sure is good. Theaters know that viewers will pay more for movie snacks, so they hike up the prices: A bag of popcorn that costs 37 cents to make can easily sell for $5.

Wine at a restaurant is marked up 300%. Restaurants routinely charge as much as $30 for bottles of wine that retail online for $7 or $8 which is why I like the BYOB places.

There is a 40% mark up for pre-cut produce. Buy it whole and cut it up yourself because grocery stores charge almost 1.5 times more for pre-cut fruit and veggies than for uncut produce.
